Tito Ortiz's MMA debut was at UFC 13 in 1997. Ortiz competed as an amateur for no money or contract. He lost in the Lightweight final to Guy Mezger in 2:00 in the first round (submission). Inspired by UFC Heavyweight Champion Bas Rutten, Ortiz was determined to becoming a champion. On April 14, 2000 he got that chance at UFC 25 (Ultimate Japan 3). Not only did he win his first Championship, he become the first Light Heavyweight Champion of the UFC. Ortiz went on to defend his Light Heavyweight title a record five times over a three year span
